Part 18: Descendancy Narrative of Reubon Walker (1)

Descendancy Narrative of Reubon Walker (1)

This is Eliza Thorne, the mother of Eliza Thorne II. Eliza Thorne was a slave on a Plantation in Culpeper Virginia on a hill overlooking the Porter Property near Mineral, Va. After hearing that she was free on the Culpeper Court House Steps, she left Culpeper with her sisters for Stony Point with a Conestoga Wagon, a team of horses and cattle for her new home on 11 Achers of land in Stony Point near the Free Union Church.

As a slave, she learned how to make furniture. Slave law in VA. allowed slave to work for themselves on their free time and make money. She sold her furniture to local area people and made enough money to be wealthy by today's standards.

a)  Rufus Nicholas4 Tyree (254).  Obituary
Rufus N Tyree was born to the late Joshual L. and Arlean B. Tyree March 25, 1926 in Glouster County, Virginia. A very religious atmosphere permeated their homelife. He grew up in a Christian loving family about whom he was proud to talk.  At an early age he joined the Free Union Baptist Church in Stony Point, Virginia.

While still young his family ventured for a new life and moved to Charlottesville, Virginia.

Rufus attended the the public schools of Virginia, graduation in 1943 from Albemarle Training School. Upon completion of the limitation of these facilities, he joined the United States Navy, serving his country for three years; thereafter, moving to Washington, D.C.

Life was not complete without sharing, therefore he married Queen Ester McGee. To his wife he was loving and strove to make them comfortable and happy.

Rufus, remembering his parents' Christian experiences and training that they should have a church home and make preparation for a Heavenly home, twenty-eight years ago he united with Meridian Hill Baptist Church. He was a active participant in numerous organizations of the church such as Bible Class, of which he was the current President, the Deacon Board and Chaplain of the Birthday Club. Rufus was happy here and found warmth, the privilege to serve and a spiritual fulfillment.

Rufus loved his job as a machine operator for the Canada Dry Company of Silver Spring, Maryland.

He leaves pleasant memories in the lives of his devoted family: wife, sister, three brothers, two uncles, seven god-daughters, seven sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends and neighbors.

Milestones

Rufus died of a heart attack at the Walter Reed Hospital on February 4, 1984 just 49 days short of his 58th birthday.  His early life was chronicled in Proffit, VA joining the Free Union Baptist Church at an early age, trodding the dusty roads each Sunday with the other kids, racing to be the first to enter the church doors.

His education pursuits were rural one-room schools and the Albemarle Training High School where he graduated. This was not an easy task given the fact that the school was over 20 miles from home and required walking when the bus would break down.

Rufus will be remembered in this community as the boy who sang all hours of the night. His voice would be heard late into the night and early morn as he cheerfully went about his chores. Never afraid of the dark, he found his way while others slept.

He served with distinction with the U.S. Navy in World War II aboard the USS Jenkins destroyer escort, fighting gallantly throughout the Pacific. (He was perhaps the only person who served in the Navy that never learned to swim.)

Upon is Discharge, he migrated to Washington, DC where he worked for a while at the government printing office before joining the Canada Dry corporation.

He married Queen Ester Hughes (McGee?) and their efforts and works in and through the Meridian Hill Baptist Church glorify their endeavors as well as their father "which art in Heaven."  Rufus (254)'s occupation: Machine Operator in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.  He married Queen Ester McGee Hughes (255).  Rufus (254) was born at Culpepper, VA area, on 3/25/1926.  Rufus (254) died on 2/4/1984 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC, at age 57.  His body was interred on 2/9/1984 at Free Union Baptist Church Cemetery, Stony Point, VA.
